Aaron's 499 has always been held in early May or late April. Four races are run with restrictor plates, the 499, UAW Ford 500, the Pepsi 400 and the Daytona 500. In 1997, Mark Martin set the record for the fastest NASCAR race ever run. Martin's average speed as 188.354 miles. It has formerly been known as the Alabama 500, Winston 500, Winston Select 500, DieHard 500 and Talladega 500.

There are 188 laps involving a distance of 500 miles. Before the demise of the NASCAR Grand Slam, Aaron's 499 was known as the second leg. It was also previously part of the Winston Million. It is called the 499 instead of the 500 because of the sponsor's tendency to offer rentals at $99 a month. The 2006 winner was Jimmie Johnson. Jeff Gordon won the previous two years, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won the two consecutive years prior in 2002 and 2003. The 2003 race had a 27 car crash on lap four, giving Earnhardt a controversial win.
