Considered one of NASCAR's top 10 races, it was formerly known as the Brickyard 400 until 2004. The 400-mile race covers 160 laps. The Allstate 400 was the first race since 1916 to be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway besides the Indianapolis 500. The race is preceded by the Pennsylvania 500 and followed by the AMD at The Glen.

The tradition of drivers kissing the bricks before the race at the start-finish line was started in 1996 by Dale Jarrett and his Robert Yates Racing crew. There have been six winners of the Allstate 400 that went on to become NASCAR Nextel Cup winners the same year. Jeff Gordon first did thi sin 198 and then again in 2001; Dale Jarrett in 1999; Bobby Labonte won both in 2000; Tony Stewart in 2005; and Jimmie Johnson in 2006. Seven of the nine winners of the Allstate 400 have at least been Nextel Cup winners in their career. The only two who did not win in the same year were Bill Elliott and Dale Earnhardt.
