The first race took place in 1960, and it covers 500 miles and 325 laps. It has had a number of different names over the years, known as the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 from 2003-2005, after it was called the NAPA 500 from 1995-2002. The Hooters 500 was the race's name from 1992-94 and the Dixie 300, 400, and 500 from its inception in 1960 through the 1979 season.
The 1992 race has been regarded as one of the best NASCAR races of all time. It was a close race, with six drivers eligible for the Winston Cup Championship. Bill Elliott won the race, but was edged out over a record 10-point margin for the Cup by Alan Kulwicki. Start times have changed over the past few years, with another expected change for the 2007 season because of the Daylight Savings Time standard revision. The 2006 winner was Tony Stewart, following Carl Edwards 2005 win.
