Held at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina on Memorial Day weekend, it covers 600 miles and 400 laps. It was formerly known as the World 600 since its inception in 1960, and in 1985 became the Coca-Cola World 600 in 1985 before being known as the Coca-Cola 600 since 1986. It started as a way for NASCAR to compete with the Memorial Day event of the Indianapolis 500. The race is preceded by the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge and followed by the Neighborhood Excellence 400.

Once lights were installed at the track in 1992, the request from fans came to start the race later in the day because of the high North Carolina temperatures and humidity. A starting time of 5:30 p.m. was decided on in 2001 after a number of years of moving back the start time. Parabolic reflectors are used to light the track and reduce the glare in drivers' eyes. The 2006 winner was Kasey Kahne, and in 2005 the record for the most cautions in any NASCAR race was set with 22 cautions.
