It is a 500-mile, 200-lap race which will celebrate its 50th running in 2008. It is regarded as the most prestigious and important NASCAR race and has the largest purse of all the races. In terms of championship rankings, however, the Daytona 500 carries an equal weight compared to the other races. Though it holds such importance, unlike other sports, it is the circuit's first race of the year. Viewers at home continue to support the race on television, as it has been the highest rated auto race of the year in terms of television ratings since 1995.

Known as "The Great American Race" and the "Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing," the Daytona 500 is held around Presidents Day weekend, and held in February on the second or third Sunday since 1971. The trophy awarded for winning the race is the Harley J. Earl Trophy. The car that wins the race is put on display for one year at the museum Daytona USA, adjacent to the Daytona International Speedway. The death of legend Dale Earnhardt happened during the 2001 Daytona 500, in a crash on the track.
