It is a NASCAR Nextel Cup race and runs on a Saturday night in mid-May. The race is a merger of the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 and the Mountain Dew Southern 500. The merger came out of the 2005 NASCAR realignment. The first race took place in 2005, and is a 501-mile race that covers 367 laps. It is preceded by the Crown Royal 400 and followed by the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge. Greg Biffle won both the 2005 and 2006 race.

Darlington Raceway was the first superspeedway built specifically with NASCAR racing in mind. The design is unique, as the ends of its egg-shaped oval have different configurations. Reconfiguration of the track caused the front stretch to become the back stretch, and seating tops out at 65,000. Darlington holds the status of being the first NASCAR Superspeedway. It is known as "The Lady in Black" for the white walls that end up black at the end of the races. The Diamond Hill Plywood Co. 200 of the NASCAR Busch Series is also held at Darlington. The track length is 1.366 miles
