The first race took place in 1982, and is 133 miles over 250 laps. Becoming the Food City 250 in 1992, it was formerly known as the Jay Johnson 200 from 1990-91, and the Jay Johnson 200 in 1989. Called the Tri-City Pontiac 200 from 1985 to 1988, it was the Free Service Tires 200 in 1984 after the name was changed from the Free Service Tire Stores 150 in 1983. It was first called the Pet Diary 150 in 1982.

The 2006 winner was Matt Kenseth, following the 2005 win by Ryan Newman. Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the race in 2004, after Michael Waltrip and Jimmy Spencer in 2002. Kevin Harvick won for two consecutive years in 2000 and 2001. The Bristol Motor Speedway held its first race in 1961, and is one of the most popular tracks in NASCAR. Its construction is completely of concrete, which is similar to Dover without the length. Turns are 36 degrees and straightaways are 16 degrees of banking. It is the most steeply banked track used by NASCAR.
