Two races are held at Bristol Motor Speedway, The Food City 500 and the Sharpie 500. The race is sponsored by Food City, a supermarket chain with stores in Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee. To date the most successful winner at the Food City 500 is Kurt Busch, having won five of the last nine races. Using the "Bristol Bump" in 2006, Busch bumped the back bumper of former teammate Matt Kenseth with four laps to go, sending him into a slide and allowing Busch to steal the victory.

The track was built in 1960 in about one year, and cost $600,000. Originally called the Bristol International Speedway, the name was changed to Bristol Motor Speedway in 1978. The first night race was held in August, 1978. In 1996 15,000 seats were added, and by April of 1997 BMS was the largest sports arena in Tennessee and one of the largest in the country, with 118,000 seats. Today the Speedway holds 160,000 with three levels of seating and 52 luxury skybox suites.
