The first race took place in 1960, and was called the Atlanta 500 for its first 20 years. The 2006 winner was Kasey Kahne, who followed Carl Edwards' 2005 win. In 2004 the winner was Dale Earnhardt, Jr. The 500-mile race covers 325 laps and precedes the UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400. It is followed by the Food City 500. Both Fred Lorenzen and Cale Yarborough had a three-year consecutive winning streak, Lorenzen from 1962 to 1964 and Yarborough from 1967 to 1969. Yarborough also won in 1974, 1981 and 1983.

Atlanta Motor Speedway opened in 1960 and was known as the Atlanta International Raceway until 1990. The quad-oval track seats over 125,000 people. It is a 1.5 mile standard oval. A 1997 overhaul made the track one of the fastest on the NASCAR circuit. Some of the fastest times have been recorded at Atlanta Motor Speedway, though the Texas Motor Speedway for a few years saw slightly higher qualifying times. A tornado in 2005 demolished the track's original Weaver and Ford Grandstands. A new 13,000-seat replacement was put up in the Winners Grandstand.
