It started in 1950 and remained unnamed until 1955. In 1956 the race was called the old Dominion 500 until 1982, and again from 2001-2002. From 1983 to 1995 the race became known as the Goody's 500, then the Hanes 500 from 1996-97 and the NAPA Autocare 500 from 1998-2000. It is a NASCAR Chase for the Nextel Cup stock car race. The 263-mile race covers 500 laps. It is preceded by the Bank of America 500 and followed by Bass Pro Shops 500.

The Subway 500 takes place at the end of October annually. Jimmie Johnson won the game in 2006 and 2004, alternating wins with Jeff Gordon who won in 2003 and 2005. Gordon also won in 1999 and 1996. Both Darrell Waltrip and Richard Petty are tied for the most wins with six each. Petty had a streak of four in a row between 1967 and 1970, and were it not for Bobby Isaac's win in 1971, he would have won straight through until 1973. Martinsville Speedway is the shortest track in the NEXTEL Cup Series. The turns are 12 degrees.
