Coming onto the NASCAR scene in 2005, the race covers 312 miles and 312 laps. It was known as the Subway Fresh 500. It is considered one of the Top 10 NASCAR races. Taking place in late April, the race is distinguished from the Subway 500 that is held in October at the Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virginia. It follows the Samsung/RadioShack 500 and precedes the Aaron's 499 each year. The 2006 winner was Kevin Harvick, following the 2005 win by Kurt Busch.

The Phoenix International Raceway is also known simply as PIR. The one-mile track is a D-shaped Tri-Oval, with 11 degree turns at Turns one and two, and Turns three and four have a nine degree angle. Banking on the backstretch is nine degrees, and the front stretch is three degrees. Capacity is 76,800 people. The curve between turns two and three is known as "the dogleg." The "Hillside" is a favorite fan viewing area outside of Turn four. The top of the hill is where the land surveying began for the state of Arizona.
