It is the second NASCAR race in the ten-race Chase for the Nextel Cup. The first race took place in 1971. Covering 400 miles, the race does 400 laps around the track. It is preceded by the Sylvania 300 and followed by the Banquet 400. MBNA began its sponsorship in the 1995 season, and with the exception of the 2003 season, the race had the name MBNA in it. The 2003 race was called the Dover 400 just as it is today. It was first called the Delaware 500 in 1971-78 and again in 1984-1988. It became the CRC Chemicals 500 from 1979 to 1982, the Budweiser 500 in 1983, the Peak Performance 500 in 1989, Peak AntiFreeze 500 from 1990-92, SplitFire Spark Plug 500 from 1993 to 1994.

In 2005 the race was known as the MBNA RacePoints 400 and the MBNA America 400 in 2004. Once Bank of America bought out MBNA, no immediate sponsor was needed in the effort for a long-term partnership. In 2006, Jeff Burton won the race. Jimmie Johnson won in 2005 with an extended race, and Ryan Newman continued a tradition of two consecutive races won with wins in 2003 and 2004.
