It first started in 1997 and is co-sponsored by Radio Shack and Samsung. The 501-mile race covers 334 laps and follows the Advance Auto Parts 500. It is followed by the Subway Fresh Fit 500. It was formerly known as the Interstate Batteries 500 in 1997, became the Texas 500 the next year, the Primestar 500 in 1999, the DirecTV 500 for the year 2000, Harrah's 500 in 2001 and the Samsung/RadioShack 500 from 2002-2006.

The 2006 winner of the Samsung 500 was Kasey Kahne, following the 2005 champion Greg Biffle, Elliott Sadler took home the win for 2004, and Ryan Newman won it in 2003. Of the races at Texas, twelve winners have won 12 races. The joint sponsorship of the Samsung 500, as it is known today, of RadioShack and Samsung from 2002-2006 was a unique situation. In 2003 the co-sponsorship was grandfathered in when Nextel became a sponsor for NASCAR, because they banned rival wireless sponsorships. After2005 the ban was lifted after Sprint and Nextel merged, and Sprint is sold at RadioShack, and they offer Samsung products.
